Dear Parish Family,
Blessings to all of you this Memorial Day Weekend. This week we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country to preserve our God-given freedoms that promote human dignity and development. Thank you also to all those who serve in our armed forces and for all veterans who have sacrificed so much to preserve the freedoms and peace of our nation.
The Solemnity of Pentecost which we celebrate today honors the fruitful activity of the Holy Spirit given to the Church. St. John Paul II wrote in Theology of the Body, "In this struggle between good and evil, man proves to be stronger thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit, who, working within the human spirit, causes its desires to bear fruit in the good" (TOB 51:6). Poured out upon us at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit inspires good and holy desires within us, and strengthens us to pursue these desires out of love for God and our neighbor.
Fr. Spisak New Assignment and Farewell
I also wanted to let you know that Fr. Spisak has received his new assignment as part-time Parochial Vicar at Communion of Saints Parish in Cleveland Heights. He will begin his ministry there in mid-June. We will have a chance to say farewell to Fr. Spisak next weekend at the 4:00 pm Vigil Mass at St. Patrick's in Thompson and at the 12:00 pm Mass at St. Mary's in Chardon. A reception will follow both Masses. We thank Fr. Spisak for sharing the gift of his priesthood with us these last four years, and pray for him as he begins his ministry at Communion of Saints.
Eucharistic Procession
We will have a Eucharistic Procession around the parish grounds at the conclusion of the 12:00 pm Mass on Sunday, June 11 for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Pope Francis wrote in his 2021 Corpus Christi homily, “The procession with the Blessed Sacrament...reminds us that we are called to go out and bring Jesus to others. To go out with enthusiasm, bringing Christ to those we meet in our daily lives.” I invite you to join us for the procession and some time of Eucharistic exposition and adoration to follow.
Church Roof
I also wanted to let you know that the church roof is scheduled to be replaced in June/July. We've contracted with Runyon & Sons Roofing to complete this work, and are eager to replace the current roof that has served us well for the past 24 years.
Catholic Charities Appeal Follow-Up Weekend
This weekend we will conduct our follow-up Catholic Charities Appeal. Help us reach our parish goal of $132,000 by making a new, increased, or additional gift to Catholic Charities. All donations received will be allocated to expand and strengthen programs that protect the sanctity of life through care for women and children. We are only $30,000 away from reaching our goal, so every gift counts. Please use the appeal envelopes in the pews, or use the link below to submit your donation. Thank you for your generous support!
I am yours in Christ,
Fr. Scott Goodfellow
