This weekend, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints. The Church sets aside the first day of November to honor all those who have been welcomed into the heavenly kingdom. All Souls Day, November 2nd, is a day to remember those who have died but have not yet entered into the heavenly kingdom. These are the poor souls in purgatory.
Many of us have been named after saints. Hopefully, each of us has a patron saint with whom we have a special relationship. Perhaps it is the saint whose name we chose as a Confirmation name. In any case, the saints are role models for us and are truly heroes to emulate.
During these challenging times, let’s take comfort in the fact that the saints lived in challenging times as well. Some were willing to die for their faith in Christ during times of persecution. All dedicated their lives to Christ. Some did so early in life, while others experienced a great conversion later in life.
We need saints today. Our world needs to be illuminated by the light of Christ working through modern day, Catholic-Christian heroes. Both you and I are called to be saints by our baptism. Let’s say “Yes” to Christ and let’s be saints!
